This book had a really good plot, but it got bogged down at time. I loved the theme and most of the writing. However, there were times when McKinley would go off on a background story right in the middle of some event that you didn't want interrupted. Normally that would be okay, but she would go on for two or more pages, which was too much. She would also give a lot of background history to the world she had created, but a lot of it was superfluous. It took me 3 days to read it, which is a long time for me. I wish I could have given it 5 stars since McKinley is a good writer and the plot was entertaining, but I got flustered a little too frequently. Also, the fact that the story lacked chapters was mentally exhausting. I'm trained to read from chapter to chapter and not having that marker just messed with my head and made me feel like I wasn't making any progress.
